Stomatitis is an inflammation of the mucous lining of any of the structures of the mouth, which may involve the cheeks, gums, tongue, lips, and roof or floor of the mouth.
The inflammation can be caused by conditions in the mouth itself, such as poor oral hygiene, poorly fitted dentures, or burns of the mouth of food or hot drinks, or conditions that affect the whole body, such as medicines, allergic reactions, or infections. A form of stomatitis known as stomatitis nicotine can be caused by smoking cigars, cigarettes and pipes, and is characterized by small red bumps on the roof of the mouth. Herpes labialis (involvement of the lips):

Treatment
Treatment of herpes simplex keratitis depends on the severity. The first outbreak is usually treated with topical and sometimes oral anti-viral drugs. The doctor may gently scrape the affected area of the cornea to eliminate diseased cells. Patients who experience permanent corneal scarring as a result of severe and recurrent infections may require a cornea transplant to restore his vision.
There is no specific treatment for blepharitis VHS, and in most cases the course of the disease is self-limiting. The use of warm saline compresses with a topical drying agent (eg 70% alcohol) is usually sufficient to alleviate the patient. If the lesions are extensive, concomitant use of a topical antibiotic ointment is prudent to avoid a secondary opportunistic bacterial infection. The use of oral or topical antiviral agents has not been proven to improve recovery of patients with HSV blepharitis, although it is advocated by some practitioners of the most serious cases. The use of topical steroids on VHS lid lesions may be prudent, especially if there is involvement of other eye. Although corticosteroids can be used without fear in the cases of herpes zoster (HZO) blepharitis, its use in cases of HSV infection may predispose the patient to a rash of dendritic keratitis.
Additional Clinical information
HZO always include in the differential diagnosis of HSV blepharitis. Note, however, HZO that typically affects elderly patients over 70 years. Younger patients who are often immunocompromised secondary to HZO with disorders such as AIDS or lymphoma. HSV blepharitis is usually found in children but can occur at any age.
Although herpes simplex is known as a sexually transmitted disease, the vast majority of ocular herpes infections are not contracted via sexual contact. This is very important to recognize when considering pediatric cases of HSV blepharitis.
